To My Patient Families:

Just a heads up, if you were planning on getting an influenza vaccination now is the time. Cases are being identified in Washington State. Influenza can spread rapidly and with the holidays approaching it would be wise to act now. It is not too late.

For children over 2 yrs we still have Flumist, the nasal spray version of the vaccine.

As I have said in the past, influenza is a significant illness that can do harm to your child. The vaccine is the best tool we have to prevent severe cases of influenza. Every year more people die of influenza than for any other vaccine preventable illness. Every quality measure in science shows the influenza vaccine to be very safe. If your child still needs to be vaccinated for influenza now is the time to call the office.

For those household that have had a recent chest cold do not assume you are done with the flu. The last virus to hit the area was something called Human Metapneumovirus. While this virus gives you miserable sore throats and a cough that can last for weeks, Influenza is worse.

Since deductibles will renew at the start of the year this is a great time to get your child's check-up done if it has been over a year from the last one. For state employees trying to choose between plans we strongly recommend looking into setting up a Health Savings Account to help with budgeting for the costs that come from rising deductibles. Using pre-tax dollars can help reduce your costs in the long run.

Best wishes for the holidays.

Carl Lindgren
